Access to sick, injured, or dying same-sex couples.
When talking about being able to visit a loved one in a hospital, it is something many take for granted. Gay partners can be denied access to their partners in critical situations.
Gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender partners are
not considered family under Kentucky law.
Kentucky law grants important rights and
privileges to our biological family members,
but not our lifetime partners, in times of
crises, such as sickness or death. This applies not only to
hospitals, but also to long-term care
facilities, assisted living, hospice, community
health clinics and other branches of the
healthcare industry.
If you are hospitalized, your partner does not have the right to see you, or make decisions for you. Same-sex couples in Kentucky don't even have the right to visit each other when hospitalized!
