Gender Identity and Expression
Kentucky Equality
Federation believes everyone should have the
right to a workplace free from discrimination
and committed to equality of opportunity
without regard to sexual orientation or gender
identity.
Inclusive non-discrimination
policies make good business sense. Over
two-thirds of the nation's Fortune 500
companies have non-discrimination policies that
include sexual orientation. 125 of these
companies also include protections for gender
identity.
Until very recently,
international human rights treaties and
documents contained no protections specifically
for gender-nonconforming people. With the March
2007 release of the Yogyakarta Principles on
the Application of International Human Rights
Law in Relation to Sexual Orientation, and the
June 2008 adoption of a Resolution
on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender
Identity by the Organization of American
States, this situation is slowly beginning
to change on an international level.
The Real Picture
Neither the Commonwealth of Kentucky or the United States of America have laws protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or intersex people from discrimination. To be clear, Kentucky law currently offers no protection to LGBTI people from discrimination in employment, housing, credit, or accommodations.
SUPPORT: Protect LGBTI people from discrimination in employment, housing, credit, and accommodations.
We support this legislation being passed by:
- United Nations
- United States of America
- Commonwealth of Kentucky
- Subdivisions of the Commonwealth of Kentucky (counties and cities). Currently, the cities of Covington, Lexington, and Louisville offer such protections by way of a local city ordinance.
